I recently developed a vacuum leak that caused my HVAC selector to be physically stuck in defrost. It sounded like the leak was behind the dash but I suspected the canister behind the front bumper since somebody had to mess with it at one point in order to put on the winch bumper. What I found was a capped off vacuum line tucked up in the bumper but the cap was rotted off. Is this where the can is supposed to be? Can I just stick a cap on it or do I need to get a reservoir? Do I need one from another xj at the junkyard or is it something I can get at the parts store or online?

Bonus points if anybody knows what the electrical connector that was next to the vacuum line is.

Capping the line will get you by, but there's supposed to be a reservoir there. The reservoir is just a small tank that holds vacuum when the engine is under full throttle. Without it, the HVAC will go back to the windshield when you step on the gas. Cruise control is fed off of the same line. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, really you could get by with a peanut butter jar as long as you siliconed the fitting in

The electrical connector is supposed to go to a horn.

I plugged the line with a screw and some heat shrink. The leaking hissing sound behind the dash is gone but I'm still stuck in defrost. I also noticed this time that when you would try to move from defrost to heat, their would be a clicking sound from the engine bay and then the idle would drop down real low. I'll start looking for a reservoir.

Clicking is the air conditioning compressor engaging.

Get a replacement reservoir.
