Troubleshooting Intermittent Blower Motor (Researched and Stumped)
I've researched this and can't figure out an answer, any help is appreciated
What I've looked at/repaired:
- Dash/Panel switch OK
- New Resistor
- Under hood connector was failing, replaced.
The problem:
- Blower motor stops working, all switch positions. Rapping firmly on the bottom of the Evap housing below the glove box will bring the fan back to life, but it spins up VERY slowly.
Initially I replaced the blower motor resistor, thinking that because of proximity to where I was hitting under the glove box, it could be the issue. For ~$15 it was worth a try. I really am at a loss for what the issue could be.
The solution (?)
My guess now is that the blower motor is drawing a ton of current, and that initially fried my under-hood connector. Now the motor is just seized up at the brushes, and maybe hitting the evap housing kinda jolts it free to get it spinning again.
- Should I test resistance on the blower motor using a multimeter? Would that tell me if it's bad?
One extra note: I noticed the other day that while running the A/C, a LOT of moisture/frost began to accumulate in the cubby just below my glove box. I don't know if it's related, but since it's the same area of the vehicle I thought it worth a mention.
Coming from a electricians point of view. Your motor is more than likely bad. Checking to insure proper power and over current protection is in place would be a good idea prior to replacing the motor. Carbon build up on the brushes most likely is why your getting a slow start and why it will not turn over on its own without a couple kicks. Hope it helps
If you want to troubleshoot the motor, turn the blower on high then check to see if its getting approx. 12 volts at its two terminals.
First try this.
Wiggle the motor connector and tap the motor itself.
I can just about guarantee, if all that wiggling/tapping starts or stops the blower, its a bad motor or its connector pins are spread or corroded. Hard area to get to.
I checked the terminals and was getting 12v at the underhood connector. I went ahead and picked up a new blwoer motor at Autozone and the part has correct mounting tabs, but the cooling vent hole in the motor housing is 180* from the stock part, so while it mounts up I can't reattach the rubber hose.
I'm returning that part and have already ordered a new motor online, I'll post back if it it all works out.
