The AMC 360 may be too large physically to fit and clear in an XJ engine bay.

They are probably heavier, maybe by 100+ pounds, than a small block Chevy or Ford.

I wouldn't worry too much about originality. There will be a lot more speed/hop up parts for a Ford or Chevy.

How about a Ford 5.0 with a stroker kit to 347 C.I.?

I like ford motors but I think a SBC would fit the best

the engine bay size was the problem i was wondering about with the amc 360.... growing up with my dad being a ford guy, a small block ford would be ok in an xj i guess... i found a website were they make adapter kits for a sbf to bolt up to jeep, ford, and GM manual trannys, but but autos, they only make kits for GM trannys to SBC...

The AMC 360 is still a small block. It will fit. However there will be a ton little things you will have to take care of, not the least of which will be a 5-6" lift so the front drive line will clear the bell housing and still have some flex. Another issue is a lot of venting of the hood since you will not have any air circulating in the engine compartment. You will need to address those air flow issues to keep it cool. Just plan on a custom radiator which will not be cheap and custom electric fans for starters. Then there are things like throttle cables and so forth that you will have to make yourself.

347 stroker kits are pretty expensive what my brother is thinking about doing too his 87 fox.factory 5.0 with a cam would be sufficient amount of power and great sound.

If you want to keep to Jeep drive train, why not a 318 (5.2L) like they put in the Grand Cherokees for a while.

Go with the vette motor

But im baised towards vette motors... if i ever get a big block for the caprice, the LT1(early 90s vette motor) thats in may get a rebuilt and put in the jeep(this of course will be long after i graduate, and the jeep is strictly a trail rig, need the jeep to be a DD for awhile before its dedicated just to the trails)
