Default Urgent: losing idle at startup

Hi all,

I've had this happen only once before tonight, but I'm leaving for Big Bend NP tomorrow so I need to know what's going on. It's a 96 Cherokee 4L.

It fired up fine but immediately died. I then started again stepping on the throttle, keeping it going for two minutes that way. After that when stepping off, it fell down to about 500 rpm but quickly went steady running at the usual 900. What could be going bad on me here? Is immediate action required?

Thanks for all help, the sooner the better.

Carsten

This is how my '87 starts when cold too. I have to crank it over twice and then run the engine a little bit on the second try or it just dies. It runs okay once it warms up though. I just got it so I'm sure it needs a tune up, anything else I should check though?

Does this apply to the original post too? Or do things maybe point to the IAC?

I would try cleaning the IAC. They can get crusty. My '99 idled a little rough when I got it and cleaning the throttle body and IAC seemed to help.

i think what your trying to say is,the idle control motor, you can get those at any part store but,i have runned in to that problem before, its better to spend the money at the dealer, for that particular part, they tend to go bad very ofthen when there from cheap brands, also check your tps,it may need calibrating as well, good luck and post your feedback.
