Update on tank (not) venting
I posted a while ago about difficulty when I fill the tank at the gas station. The pump kicks off every 0.6 gallons or so--takes quite a while to fill up!
I pulled the separator. At least I think that's what it is--its the black box above the rear axle with three vent lines going to it. No liquid in it.
I traced the lines up front and found a plugged line at the round canister in the left rear corner of the engine bay. At least I think it was plugged--perhaps it only opens when energized--there is an electrical connection.
Anyway, I got to thinking that with a problem like this I should have a "check engine" light. But no light. In fact, no light with the key "on" and the engine not running. Hmmm, bad bulb. The bulb would not pull out of the holder, so I swapped in the one for the "Hatch open" light. Now, at least, I have a check engine light, and it works, and its lit!
AutoZone read the codes.
1) Large evap leak ( I was expecting a plugged code).
2) O2 sensor, near the cat converter.
Now, the engine I installed 4000 miles ago had the split exhaust header with 4 (count 'em 4) O2 sensors. I saved those sensors because I had to install the original-to the vehicle-exhaust manifold. Can I use one of those in the position near the cat?
Any other ideas on what to check to solve my slow fueling issue?
Oh, one more thing, about 2 or 3 times in the last 2 weeks, the engine has failed to respond to the throttle when I tried to accelerate. The "bog" lasted about 5 seconds, and then everything was normal. ( Except my heart rate because I really needed that acceleration when I needed it; not 5 seconds later )
Any ideas?
Thanks!

If you energize the canister, does the plug go away? You can pull the hose off the canister and verify that the hose is in fact plugged. nothing happens, then that part may be bad. Easy way to tell, next time you get gas, remove that hose. if it fills normally then that's your problem. As far as the 02 sensors. there are specific before and after cat 02 sensors but no reason why they shouldn't work.Let us know how you make out please.

I got gas today, and the pump clicked off every 0.15 gallons +/-!
Does anyone have a schematic of the entire evap system? It would really help me tracking down the problem.
Thanks.

jeepfan93,
THANKS!
We'll see if it bears any resemblance to my '99 tomorrow--at least that is the plan.
I pulled the battery cable to reset the OBD codes. In about 50 miles since that, the check engine light has remained OFF. Yeah!!!

Update....Saturday
I prepared to drop the tank as previously planned.
I removed the fuel filler, and hoses.....and noticed 2 things about the filler:
1) It had a broken spot--about 1/5 of the top sealing surface was cracked away and gone. From the looks of the broken area, it was NOT a recent break. Could be the evap large leak. The gasket was not touching anything.
2) The sealing valve that is in the filler was gone.....and lying in the hose where I could just retrieve it with a pair of needle nose pliers. THAT could be the reason for the slow fill. I'll find out Monday when I go to work and fill it.
I pulled a fuel filler complete with oem gas cap from the local pick 'n pull for $11.

I would think that the evaporater system has nothing to do with your slow fill.
When you fill the fuel tank there are 2 lines going down from the filler neck to the fuel tank.
Gas goes down the larger hose and the tank is vented out the smaller hose.
I would think something is in one of the 2 hoses.

I filled up with fuel today---no problems. The check valve that I retrieved from the hose must have been the problem. Keep that in mind for anyone who experiences a sudde3n problem with not being able to fill the tank.
No "check engine" light after resetting it after I replaced the filler. I've driven about 12 miles.
