Default Up or down to tighten drum brake star wheel?

I saw this thread and one guy says "Depends on whether you are on the inside or outside. Outside goes up; inside down." Aren't both adjusts on the inside?

Do you mean inside like towards the diff?

My drivers side only wants to go down but I still can't hear any friction. I'll go keep spinning that thing until something happens I guess. Can't really mess it up too bad because they don't do diddly right now.

no i mean inside the rim facing out way from the vehicle.
if you aren't sure just take the wheel and brake drum off and take a look.
if you wheel alot there is probably dirt in there that could be cleaned out anyway

outside means through the small hole in the rear of the backing plate, this way would be down to spread the shoes to tighten up the brakes. if you take the drum off to turn the star wheel, it would have to be turned up to spread the shoes.

Now that makes sense! Something just clicked in my brain. So basically when you are just doing the routine maintenance adjust with the wheel still on, you make the star wheel go down.

Thanks!
