Unusual problem
Hi all. Just curious if anyone else had this happen.
I got back from holidays with my XJ leaking oil from the left front
like crazy. No oil pressure. I got it into the garage and put some oil in it to see where the leak was coming from. On looking at the leak from underneath, I could see it was coming from the oil filter housing. Or so I thought.
Bought the three O-rings and got ready for the fix.
Then on looking down at the oil filter from under the hood, I noticed where the leak was coming from. The bolt from the motor mount had come forward slightly and had put a hole in the oil filter!
I redid the O-rings anyways.
Does anybody find that the motor mount nut/bolt is too close to the oil filter?
When you hit some bad bumps the bolt rubs against the filter making a hole in it? Maybe I jarred the motor mounts a bit on my trip.

i had a cj with the same problem. the local parts store sold me a shorter filter to fix the problem. i think the filter was for a ford engine. the problem was that the motor "twisted" to much when you hit the gas. it is a design flaw. i am guessing this problem doesn't surface until the mounts are old and soft. you could put poly motor mounts in and run the same filter or take the route i did. the shorter filter is much easier. i didn't lose any oil pressure.

a fix to your problem would be the oil filter adapter that comes on the H.O. motor. it is what i did when i had my old RENIX motor. here is a few pics and a write up for it.

Or you can just move the oil filter. All of my jeeps have the adapter turned 90 degs from yours so the filter is point to the back of the vehicle. No issues at all
Edit: damn he beat me and provided much more info: damn you trans am!!!
