Default Unreliable 1996 Cherokee

4.0L Straight Six

So to start my XJ has been giving me starting problems lately for the past 2 months or so. I though I finally figured it out but no. On Tuesday I go to start it and it turns over slowly and nuthin. Try again.... Absolutely nothing. Put in another battery and it would turn over and I'd gun it and keep an idle by applying gas. After a couple times of this it finally holds an idle without me pressing on the gas. I go to move it and it dies while in reverse. So I give up come home from school try to start it and it fires right up. Been running ever since.

The odd side was my check engine light is pretty much always on and when I got it to run before it died in reverse the light went off when I got home and started it the light came back on after 5min. Been on since.

Key diagnostic resulted with. 33- A/C clutch circuit.

I doubt that's the problem

I usually fill my tank when the gauge bounces the fuel light on and off and that's around 160miles.
Filled it last week and I'm at about 145miles and it is starting to bounce. So there is a loss of mpg as well.

Items replaced

Spark plugs
Cam sensor
Crank sensor
Dis. Rotor
Evaporate purge

Beginning of the month I blew my fuel pump fuse on the freeway. Put a new one in and it's been fine until Tuesday.

So my question is what will make my car lose mpg and fail to start at any given moment. I haven't tested the fuel pressure yet but I listened to each injector and they are all firing at an equal rate.

So is it the fuel pump, injectors, regulator(which is part of the pump in my model) or something else.

Thanks in advance!! I appreciate it!

Check fuel pressure! Your regulator should be on the fuel rail. unplug and look for raw fuel in the vacuum line.

I'd see what the actual CEL is saying first (not just the key diagnostic trick). Then I would check the fuel pressure. And yes your fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel pump module in the tank. I think I would start by looking at the TPS and MAP sensor and double check for vacuum leaks.
