Default Uh-oh. About time to replace something?

So I've been using my old man's 2007 Ford Focus to commute to college daily for the extra MPG, but I refuse to just let the ol XJ sit with no purpose (because in all honesty, everything about the XJ is better than the Focus... except the MPG). So after sitting for about 4 days, I took the XJ for a spin around town to burn the rest of the old gas in the tank and fill up a 1/4 to keep the pump submerged. Anyway, when I went to leave the gas station, I turned the key, and nothing. All gauges moved like they're supposed to, fuel pump primed and everything, except nothing from the starter. Turned it off, tried again and this time the starter burped, but not enough to crank the engine, like it wasn't getting enough power. Got out, smacked the starter with a wrench, and she started right up no problem. Is it time to replace the 20 year old starter? Or is this just an XJ acting moody because I let it sit for a few days?

Has it done it since? I'd say your best bet is to replace it.

Yeah, kinda figured it would be time to just replace it ($60 from autozone.. im not gonna complain). The irnoy is that the starter in the Focus mentioned aboved went out at only 3 years of age. Cost $120 for the part, and putting it in was a b----. Guess Im making a trip into town tomorrow. Simple swap right? Disconnect negative, disconnect 2 solenoid wires, unbolt, then put the new one in?

If smacking the starter allowed it to start, (an old trick from waaaay back), then yes,
replace the starter!
