Question U-Joint Help

Hi all,

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4WD XJ. My U-joint must have broke the other day, because it has popped out of the yoke and tore up the ears of the yoke, along with nicking some of the metal around the area. I've been looking around on here, and found plenty of help on changing the actual U-Joint, but I need to replace the yoke/piece that holds the U-joint to the wheel, as well. This would be my first real project on my XJ, so I don't have too much knowledge. However, I have read all of the write-ups on this topic, so I understand the process for the most part. I just need to know what the actual piece is that I'm looking for, and where I can get it. I live in NYC, and surprisingly I haven't been able to find it after looking around all day. The guy at the dealership told me that Chrysler won't sell the piece alone, and that I'd have to buy the whole axel for $197.00 (Which I really do not want to do).

Does anyone know where I can order the piece that I'm looking for? I have the U-Joint already (I picked it up at PepBoys today), but no one can tell me what the part is that holds it.

Thanks ahead of time!

P.S. - It's the U-Joint for the front driver side wheel. NOT the U-joint on the driveshaft or wherever else they are.

Check out this place located in Las Vegas NV. they can and will ship out.
A drive shaft from dealership in your area looks dam cheap.
if it was my truck i would check everything cuz if the u-joints bent out along with the yoke, it might have damaged the drive shaft, bent it, or damaged more then the eye, can see.
My u-joints are also bad on my rear drive shaft, but i have SYE kit installed, and will be buying this rock crawler DS from Adams.

Yea, your looking for a stub axle but are you sure it didn't wipe out the yoke in the shaft as well? Instead of fooling around trying to track down wierd vibrations and what not might just be easier to buy a new axle. Replace the passenger side and any other trashed u-joints now, before they blow up too.

X2 Getting a stub shaft from the junkyard- if it's a pick-your-part style, then you will also get the experience of removing everything (brake caliper, wheel hub, etc) once first before you have to do it on your vehicle. The part from the JY should be pretty cheap, and in general most should still be in good shape. Make sure you don't get one from an XJ from 87-90, because those shafts used a different u-joint. If one of your u-joints has already blown, it is probably a good idea to replace the other side while you have the Jeep jacked up.

Thumbs up

Thanks for all of the advice. I have been looking around online, as well as at my jeep, and I think my best bet may be to order the whole driver side front axle shaft assembly. I already purchased the u-joint as I mentioned earlier, but I'm going to listen to you guys and use it to replace the passenger side one before it blows out and I have to redo this all over again. I wasn't even thinking of that but I'm glad you guys mentioned it.

Thanks again for the advice, hope this goes well!

X (above), In the "old days" A JY might even pull a part like that axle for you. Besides "pick'n pull" or whatever there might be a yard that could sell you an axle to put that new joint into and install. Just an option, maybe.

May be a stupid question, but how did you bring up dealer prices in my area? I'm looking for where I can buy the whole driver side shaft.

Thought you were talking about front or rear drive shaft. but later read the post and your looking for the front axles. my bad. lol but yes you can also chk dealer prices. somtimes parts are hard to come by and the dealership is the only option. but then Out here in Veges we have a alot of different auto parts stores for parts. some carry basic needs, and some have special order.
I always look around for best price, or hard to find parts, somtime i just have to j/y, or dealer.
