88 ac help.

88 ac help.
Hey guys, I've got a 88 beater that'd I'd like to get the ac working on. It's still r12. It blows and isn't hot but isn't cold either. I'm looking to convert to r134.
Do I need to convert to a complete newer style ac system from a newer cherokee? I found a write up(link at bottom) that shows someone converting from r12 to r134. He used a newer style compressor to drop the pressures & got some custom hoses made.
What all should I do, I want to do it right the first time around. Please help this ac noob out,
