Default Turning the KEY produces Relay CLICK but not start then it works

Hey guys, so this happened twice to me today so far. I got in to turn on XJ and it just CLICKED and it didn't turn over. Then I did it again and it worked fine. This happened twice.

Now my battery is very old. ITs 10/10 battery so I know it will need to be replaced, my questions is, do I have something else going out as well so I can fix all this at once?

I does sound like a low voltage issue, which is more than likely caused by your old battery, and/or corroded battery cable connectors.

Batteries are only good for about three years, good ones around five years.

I've had good luck using Advance Auto Parts batteries over the years.

Battery cables and end connectors are critical. Make sure they're not corroded.

OK, so i'm not entirely sure its the battery. I bought one anyway but will install it after work as I want to redo the battery terminals etc. But while I picked it up I couldn't get it to start and the guy at Advanced Auto parts said lets for now hook up his battery backup box thingy. It still wouldn't work. in fact the Relay wouldn't click. So I remembered reading about the NSS or messing with the Shifter Column. After I did that I was able to get it to start. Unless it was just coincidence.

Could very well be the NSS. Did you try starting it in neutral?
