My '92 XJ has a 27 spline C8.25 with 3.55 gears. I would like to eventually put an Aussie Locker with 4.10's in it. The main problem is there is not an Aussie locker for the 27 spline 8.25. I know I will need a larger carrier to go up to 4.10 gears. So if I'm already buying new gears, carrier, bearings, and an Aussie locker the only thing I missing is axles (right?).
My question is: can I swap the internals from a 29 spline (axles, carrier, pinion, etc.) into my 27 spline housing??

So if I just get all the parts for a 29 spline I should be able to just swap it all out at once and not have to mess with the housing at all!

you can keep your carrier and buy the spider gears for a 29 spline then buy the shafts and ring and pinion. if you are buying a locking diff. just buy the 29 spline and new shafts

the wheel bearings might be different but the pinion bearings should be tha same

Would it be cheaper to just buy a 29 spline 8.25 axle. That's what I did to replace my stock 27 spline 8.25. I got the whole axle for like $100.

The 8.25 carrier is the same for all gear ratios. It does not have to be changed like the D35 and D44.Originally Posted by rivercrazy
I'd have to change the carrier to go to 4.10's anyway.

The carrier is different for the 27 and 29 spline models. To do the conversion you need the 29 spline axle shafts, carrier and spider gears. The axle bearings are the same, the difference in the axle shaft diameter is at the step down where the splined section goes into the carrier.

Checked other suppliers and I have a feeling the first supplier has some catalog mis-information.
