Default Turned Key. CLUNK. Pause. Engine started as normal.

Turned key, heard a loud clunk, then a silence for a second, and then engine cranked and fired right up, like usual.
Any idea what could be the issue? Starter going bad? Is that a hard repair on the XJ ?

If the starter is old, replace it.

You may want to remove the starter and examine the Bendix shaft to see if it's galled or dirty. A little grease on the shaft may help. If it's galled replace the starter.
