I would never want to go even above 75 in my jeep.... it handles bad enough allready.
These are not street fast cars! If you want that, get a bmw! Or almost anything else...

i think a street xj would be awesome, i think its a great way to mod a 2wd xj, otherwise its just another grocery getter just like all the other suvs.

the Older alloy Buick V6 w/ turbo. would be my choice. . Used to be a common swap for older CJ's. To save on overall weight, verses Horse power gain. The old Buick "Grand National" where fast cars, In their day.

I think I actually read an article one time about a barn find XJ that was some kind of factory experiment or something, and it had a buick 3.8L turbo V6. It was a one off custom (complete with "Very Limited" badges) and a very interesting story. Apparently it was pretty quick.
Bang for your buck for absolute power and speed. Swap in a Chevy smallblock V8. Advance adapters or Novak adapters sells everything your need to swap one in. And most, if not all, of it is bolt on stuff...

As far as a great streetable powertrain that offers better performance than the factory 4.0, the stroker option is your best bet. You can take it from a poor man's 4.5L stroker by simply using the crank and rods out of a 4.2L Jeep I6 and your 4.0L's pistons. All the way up to a wild 4.9-5.0L custom job with the block bored way out to fit custom pistons, ect... Jeepstrokers.com is your greatest resource of stroker knowledge anywhere on the web.
IMHO go stroker for driveability, offroad, and fuel economy. They generate enough low end torque that it becomes much easier for the motor to pull the fat lady (XJ) around, therefore better mileage. But if you've got the time and money, do that V8, because that's just friggen cool.

to be honest man if you want speed find another vehicle to make fast... but if you want to jump off the line quick and have torque then youve got the right vehicle...ive actually been thinkin about a turbo kit just for fun. you could get a t3 turbo and spool it quick as hell, or a 60 trim and have boost lag but when it hits you better hold on.. and boost is only good for low compression motors unless its a fully built motor. i dont know if the 4.0 is low or high compression. but keep in mind if you go turbo you need injectiors, fuel rail, intercooler and the list goes on and on. not to mention you will pay alot more if you want to keep you a/c. and youll have to have it tuned to run properly

jeeps are not ment for speed.. sher you can do a 350.. but the aw4 wont cut it.. youll run out of gear and your rpms will be all over the place..
like someone said befor 2jz-GTE with THAT auto trans.. is a 3.0l I6.. yeah its smaller but its dohc and the header is not on the same side as the in take.. with the turbo it revs up soooooo fast.. its gross.. and at 1500 or 7500 rpms that trans will shif like a dream.. i guess what im trying to say is.. if your going to sawp motors and stuff you have to change out your trans and regear you cant just do a motor and at that point i wood get a 6.0l 6 speed GTO.... thats just me tho ( my two 0.02 )

I love my jeep the way the engine is bad*** offroad and was clocked by a buddy at 110 the other day or as i like to say ten since my speedo only reads 85 but i would be scared out of my mind if it had much more power and could go much faster but i have reason to believe my throttle body has already been bored

i disagree, and im sure ProstreetJeep would disagree also
ehh, the 4.0 pushes more than enough air to spool a 60t pretty fast
who told you that nonsense?
4.0 is a pretty low compression motor .
honestly the biggest issue with putting a turbo system on a 4.0 is finding good placement for the turbo. there is really not enough room to have it on the intake side of the motor and im really not a fan of the 505 placement.
