Default Trying Not to Strip Serpentine Adjusting Bolt: '92 XJ

Which way to tighten the serpentine adjust bolt underneath the power steering pump on a 1992 Cherokee Sport? I turn it clockwise, then counter-clockwise and I cannot tell if it loosens or tightens. I fear the bolt might be on its way to being stripped out. Before I make things worse, I thought a brother/sister forum member here could set me straight. It's going to be a pain to change that thing out if it comes to that. Thank you.

Yes you have the two back bolts, but also the top front bolt, and the nut on the front too.

The nut strips easily! it is a powdered metal nut, not very strong. I made a replacement from bar stock.

1. First make sure that ALL the securing bolts are loosened, if not and you try to turn the adjustment bolt, that nut can be stripped.

2. Beaure to clean off the threads of the adjustment bolt (tooth brush) and oil it well before turning it so as to reduce chance of stripping the nut.

If nut is stripped then you must replace it. replace with new powedered metal nut or make your own. ( for which you will need the correct bar stock, saw, drill and tap.)

always lubricate this nut and adjusting bolt upon install.

good luck!
