run the motor around to tdc on compression stroke with the gears on and see where dist points it should be to no i some vechicles the dist will point to no6 when timing marks are installed

and it ran sinse youve had it put the timing marks the way the manualsay and pu it back together it will run again
I'm not really confident that will happen. I have it all torn apart, due to the fact that it stopped running. I am going to align the gears, make sure the #1 piston is all the way up. I will button the front all up and move the distributor to #1. As long as the timing marks are lined up, I can easily move the distributor back if I have to.

i was going to say that next as long as you did the gears right you can always move the dist later but like i said befor some vechicles the dist will point to no6 when the timing marks are lined up .the mark being lined up does not mean this also tdc compression stroke for no1 cyl youll be fine
The chain was not broken. It just would'nt start one day. Has spark and fuel, just will not start. Rotor at #1 tdc timing mark on the harmonic balancer was off. Took it all apart and after 280k the chain was really loose. This is where it began. Now, I cannot get the timing marks on the gears and the distributor to point all in the right way. So I will do like I said before. As long as the gears are lined up correctly, I can take that out of the equasion (sp). I am wondering if, when it jumped timing it did something to the dist gear?

a nother note when putting back together the firing order in the haynes manual is correct just dont go by the dist cap screws in the pic the one i posted is correct according to screw location
Iv'e got the manual. I don't like the way they illustrate that either. I'm pretty confident that if I move the dist back to #1 at tdc I will be in good shape. I will start reassembly late tomorrow after xmas shopping for the kids. I will keep everyone posted on my findings. Thanks for your interest freegdr.

hmmm....it may not be timing chain related.
pull the dizzy and inspect the teeth on the dizzy and inside the motor on the cam drive.
because if the dizzy was never removed, it should be directly in sync with the position of the cam shaft unless something happened with the teeth of the dizzy
a timing chain just wont go bad one day without breaking. it would have been a gradual decline in performance leading up to the no start.

It's defenitly a timing issue. The chain was part of the issue, but there may be more. I remembered hearing some ticking out of the motor. I assumed it was the 280k on it, but it may have been the timing chain slapping around.
