no Its in with the spring side going back into the block. The stock housing I dont think will bolt down on there with it in backwards. I didnt realize they have them at the local places. I need a new one or is it just that I need to use some gasket sealant. I scraped it and cleaned it very well.

Use a thin, and I mean THIN coat of RTV on both sides of the paper gasket. The extra layer of RTV helps seal any imperfections in the block or housing.

Both surfaces sterile clean, no pitting in both the head mount surface and the cover mount surface, applying a thin film of RTV on both sides of the gasket, making sure the stat doesn't slip out it's groove and just snug on the bolts will just about guarantee no leaks. Over tightening the bolts will warp/distort the cover/housing just about every time.

I just did mine over the weekend. As all ready mentioned, use a thin amount of RTV on both sides of the gasket. Re assemble everything and torque the housing down to the recommended specs. Start it up let the motor warm up to normal operating temp then shut it down and re-torque t stat bolts to the recommended specs. You have to make sure EVERYTHING is clean. No old gasket material, it will leak for sure. If your t stat housing has a badly pitted mounting flange where the gasket sits, get a new one they're cheap.
