Default transmisson question.

96 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0 4x4
Just replaced the front pinion seal because of leak. What fluid should I use to refill?

Next question, jeep shifts well in all forward gears, but very hesitant in reverse. Is this because the fluid is low, dirty filter, or gear going?

Dex III.
It can be your low fluid causing to hesitate in reverse. What does the fluid look and smell like? Is it a bright red and does it smell burnt?

Robert, Thank you.
My husband is hard headed and hates when I know more about auto repair than him. My Dad raised me around the garage and I love working on trucks and getting dirty. I had to put the question on here to ease his mind.

The fluid is red and does not smell burnt.

"Does your husband know you are on CF??" (Lol, don't take that personal, I just had to laugh about your post)

Maybe your shift linkage is off...
I know the shifting of forward gears are related to the solenoids, and when shifting irratic (and fluid quality and level are good) those should be considered playing up. Not sure about that with reverse though...others might chime in here.

a pinion seal is on the front axle, that is filled with your favorite flavor of gear oil.

are you talking about the input shaft/pump seal on the transmission?

Not a problem, That's what we are here for. Hope it helps. If you are still having a problem with it after refilling it to the right level let us know and we can go from there. Keep us updated.

EXCELLENT POINT! 85-90 Gear oil in the diff. (or there is more to it with limited slip).

And Dexron III in the transfer case and AW4 automatic.
