Default transmission slip out of 4wd

Hello,
2001 4wd Cherokee LTD. 112000 miles. City driving no off-road. One owner/me. Never towed anything. My problem is that when I shift to 4wd it slips out into neutral after a short distance. I have to stop the car, turn off the engine and then shift back into 2wd before I can drive. I have been very diligent about keeping the car serviced and in good mechanical shape. Do I need to be seriously concerned or might there be a simple explanation that I am unable to come up with on my own? If you have to tell me that I need a complete rebuild please be gentle.
Thanks folks!

LOL

Check the TC shift linkage bushings, while under the Heep, have someone in the cabin run the TC shift lever through the selections and see if there is any slop.

How do you shift it? Like this?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
