Default Transmission Removal?

Hey I found a 97 XJ on the local craigslist for cheap but it has just under 200k and suppose to run great but slips in second gear.
I also found a transmission and transfercase for real cheap locally from a 2000 XJ that only has 79k on it.
First question the tranny from a 2000 would fit in a 97 correct?
Also I am somewhat mechanically inclined but have never gone that far as to replace a transmission and transfer case, is this something that could be done in my driveway with myself and a buddy?
I've only replaced one motor and tranny a 307 that was a three on the tree for a 700r4 and that was from a 71 C10 I'm building and was just a bare frame so it was pretty easy
What do you think, is it worth it?
The body of the jeep is pretty good, except for the rear bumper.

yes, transmission change is pretty easy and straight forward.
but it is best if you have a tranny jack. that tranny and t-case is very freaking heavy.

x2 its not a hard job. it can be done in the driveway. i did mine. its heavy so yea if you dont have a transmission jack be careful and balance well. i just used a floor jack and me and 2 buddies to control it. best of luck

if the 2000 is the same transmission and transfer case as the one 97 it will fit fine. and yes, I replaced mine with a buddy in my driveway, didn't have a tranny jack, just a regular jack but balancing it was hard.

Cool thanks guys! I got one large floor jack and two of the cheaper smaller ones so I hope we could balance it.
I'm still debating if I can really afford to get it and fix it and even if I do I would need to sell my other Jeep or something to make up for the costs...
It just seems to be at such a good price its hard to pass up!

There may be a difference in the output speed sensor, I don't recall which years have what. I believe you can just take the extension housing off the rear of the transmissions and exchange them. Also the newer transmission has more sensors but that should not be a problem.

Yeah someone on Jeepforum just mentioned that 98 and later have 2 sensors while 97 still only has one.
