So, let me get this straight.

The guy recommending +4 has had numerous threads regarding trans issues?

Yet he "recommends" the same fluid that others have had problems with?

And then defends his recommendation by digging a hole denying he made those recommendations?

It is election year.......

If you'd look far enough into the trans issues I had it was with a 46RH Chrysler tranny. But nice try

That's why I wanted to get it straight. I don't have time to read all those threads.

Back on topic:

AW4 uses dex/Merc. Not +4.

I put a new trans filter in a friends jeep(Power Torque transmission filter FK-227) and right on the sticker it says to use Dexron III.. here is a pic of the filter sticker/ tag

If I remember correctly the aw4 origionally called for DexronII, If you look at the trans drain plug, you will see "dII" stamped into it.
DexronII is no longer around, so it is recommended that you use DexronIII/Mercon.

Here is a pic of my trans plug

So yes I would Agree 100% the AW4 should use Dex/merc III

That's how they were designed. Not a transmission problem.

For those interested in the AW4 trans fluid, here's a list of the recommended fluids throughout history. Compiled from the data that I have.

Note that the starting recommended fluid was Mercon. Go figure.

Here's a list of ATF types and applications, and other goodies -

Go here: http://www.aa1car.com/

Click - Alphabetical Index of All Auto Diagnosis & Repair Topics, then...

Under Index of Auto Repair & Diagnosis Articles, scroll down to

Automatic Transmission Fluid (Types and Applications) and open.

Read about Mercon and Dexron.

Mercon and Dexron II are so similar they're basically interchangeable. They spec one but allow the other, occasionally flip-flopping which is primary.
Ford supplied AMC with Ignition modules and other parts until 1990, no? It would make sense they purchased the factory fill ATF from them as well. When Ford disappeared, so did the Mercon recommendation.

Don't know how DEXRON III/MERCON came about.
