Default Transmission questions..

Hi. Long story short I just bought a 98 xj from a guy who turned out to have very little integrity. I've only been driving it for a couple days and the transmission (automatic AX4 ? or whatever it's called) has started slipping randomly. After discovering that the check engine light bulb had been removed from the cluster I checked codes and found three relating to the transmission;
p0700 (Transmission control system (MIL request))
p0743 (torque converter clutch circuit electrical)
p0758 (shift solenoid B electrical)

The plus side is I have a complete wrecked 99 xj in my garage with all the parts (except the uni body itself) in perfect working order.

I have parts and can swap them but I've had 5 xj's now and never dealt with transmission anything before so I don't even know what or where these parts are.

Thanks for any help ya'll can give

Presuming the harness and connectors are in good shape, you may have some failing/sticking solenoids.
What's the fluid look like? If it's gunky, that could be causing them to stick.

It's an easy transmission to work on. Solenoids are a simple pan drop, changing the fluid is even easier, just pull the drain plug.

Solenoid change:

Refill with Dexron III/Mercon. Ignore the parts guy when he tells you to use ATF+4.

finally found some time to get under my jeep. I swapped all three solenoids and replaced the filter. Seems to have solved the problem for now, however the fluid that came out was very dark and smelled burnt. I'm not sure what this indicates. Should I be concerned that more of the transmission was damaged than just the solenoids? Or was the solenoid problem what caused the burnt fluid?

They caused the slipping which trashed the fluid. If it shifts good now I wouldn't worry about it

Refill it with +4. This is what all Chrysler dealers are running including myself and many others. Stick to the right fluids that the manufacturer recommends.

The manufacturer of the trans is Aisen-Warner and they recommended Dex Merc.

If it's working for you, great.

But, it has been proven to cause issues many times. I would not "recommend" it.

Drain and fill. Repeat.

Also, adjust your tV cable.

That's what Chrysler dealers use now. That's all I was stating.

Give it up. It's all right there for anybody to see. You gave a recommendation, and it was wrong, and it was corrected. No big deal. We all make mistakes.

Pretending you didn't is another matter.
