A "whine " could be many things from the front pump of the trans to just the gearing. Some cars-trucks all have distinctive noise pitches from the way they were made--hums-whines-exhaust-etc as long as that is how they were supposed to sound.

I'd be more concerned with a vibration that just showed up all of a sudden unless they appeared about the same time. time to get under her and do some checking. All axles-ujoints-broken shock -whatever.
When is the last time you had ur trans fluid changed? How does it look ?

So many noises are acceptable cause thats just how they were made and Jeeps make alot of NOISE. Mine for the most part is pretty good on all fronts except for the darn compressor sqeal whenever I use the AC. Its been that way for sooooo long now and sometimes its better than others and then not at all.

I have been going through all my fluids the last month-summer is here and excessive heat is no friend to bad fluids.
I was kinda lucky and my friend let me pop it on the lift after hrs at a Midas shop where we went through everything we could see . Prying-pulling-I was actually amazed how good it looked as far as no wear on all the parts for now.!! But at the same time I took exception to the ujoints on the rear driveshaft and will be changing them out along with the others as time permits. Why wait til it busts if the milage and age are telling me its "time".

The best way I know to describe the "whine" is like gear driven timing on a small block 350 but only when its in gear I have no clue about the transmissions service history but I plan on doing it all soon I don't daily drive it so I'm not overly concerned about fixing it now but I wasn't even sure if it was a problem or something normal

sounds like you might have a problem with the bands or somthing like that, my old rover used to do that then the box just destroyed itself.
are your fluids clean in the box, if there are band issues you sometimes get discoloured fluid with a bad smell to it?
