Default Transmission Question

I have a 1996 Cherokee. As I have noticed with others, the neutral safety switch has gone bad. When I looked up the part online there are two types of switches depending on your trans size. How do I determine if I have a 3 speed or a 4 speed automatic? Thanks for your help.

L6, its 6 inline cylinders, not a v shape with 3 on each side.

You have the AW4 4 speed.

those switches can be expensive. A new one was gonna run me $120 so I just ran one of the wires right to ground when mine wouldn't start. Not the best option if you can afford a new one unlike me but now you can start it in any gear and the reverse lights still work so no harm no foul!

Oh I am well aware of the price, that's why I was hoping I only had the 3-speed. I have to say I have been very lucky when it has come to repairs so I'm going for the new one. I only have 65K on the car so it's worth the investment.

How much time does it take to replace the NSS and is it difficult? I'm going to try and see if my Father can do it instead of bringing it to the mechanic. He is very good with cars but if it's a pain to do I don't want to ask him.
