Default Transmission problem?

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0L. A few days ago it started to intermittently run a little rough during acceleration or while idle. Yesterday on my way home from work it started giving me a 1 or 2 second hesitation between stepping on the gas the engine revving and the thing actually moving. Finally this morning I get in and it starts up and idles fine and after I backed out of my parking space I drove about 30 feet to a steep little hill that leads out of my complex and the jeep had no power, I step on the gas and the engine revs but the thing will barely move like it's in neutral. I put in in reverse and backed down the hill and even on flat ground it would barely move. It sounds fine, theres no knocking or grinding or anything that I could hear besides running a little rough. No burning or unusual smells either.

Anybody have any ideas? I live in an apartment and have only a few tools so I'm weary of having it towed to a shop and being told I need a new transmission. I've already had power loss problems 2 years ago but replaced the CPS and was good to go, these are different symptoms but is there any sensor that might cause this?
