Default Transmission overpowering brakes?

89 xj, 215k miles, 4.0, auto, np231, 4x4, 4" lift, 31" tire

The last few weeks it seems when i try to come to a complete stop it feels like the transmission is trying to overpower the brake system. If i shift into neutral when braking it seems to help but not much Any ideas?

Thanks!

your brakes suck and by no means can your transmission overpower anything if your engine was at a ridiculously high idle it would potentially overpower brakes but once again a good working brake system can easily defeat the engine even at full throttle...

LOL

OP - Have your torque converter checked. Sounds like it may be stalling at a much lower RPM than it should be.
