I drove my 2001 Cherokee this morning and everything was fine. At lunch I crank it up in the garage and it's making a sound like something is rubbing while in park. I put it in reverse and back out and when I go past neutral all kinds of noise is heard. I noticed that my brake warning light and air bag light are on. When I put it in drive the noise stopped. I pulled back into the garage and moved the shifter from park, reverse, neutral. The noise was there in park and neutral but not in the other selections. I shut the jeep off and restarted it. The lights went out and it runs fine. I'm thinking that the ECM had a hiccup and that would explain the lights but I don't understand why the transmission would make all that noise. 87,000 miles on the Jeep and the fluid level of the trans was fine. What could be the cause of this?

 

Electrical hiccup. May have locked the converter up. Check all your grounds and make sure they are clean and shiney. Electrical problems can cause havok on these jeeps.
