Default Transmission mount/crossmember

95, RWD, Automatic

I went ahead with replacing the transmission mount and it turned into a disaster. I cannot get the crossmember back on. The transmission and engine seem to be shifted too far foward so the holes in the crossmember do not line up with the frame. I tried flipping the crossmember around and that did not help.
Any tips or suggestions to get this back together?

If I cant get this back on I might just buy some steel and make my own crossmember. Anyone make their own?

Thanks for any help.

Could be why you were replacing you transmission mount.

Do you have a transfer case drop or trashed motor mounts? Or know if any of this was a problem in the past, possibly before you owned the rig?

You might try loosening up the motor mounts and using a pry bar to get things where they need to be.

I had to do some work on my 97 XJ to get my new mounts in after I removed a transfer case drop. When I changed the mounts on my 01 XJ which never had any of that, the job was very easy.

Mine is 2WD,
I didnt know this was going to be a problem, seemed pretty straight foward install.
The drivers side motor mount needs replaced, I have bought new ones already and was planning on doing that tomorrow.

I am thinking I might have to drill out the holes in the crossmember where the Trans mount goes through just to get the crossmember to bolt up to the unibody then change the motor mounts then go back to the cross member and readjust it after the motor mounts are in.

Im afraid of looseing the motor mounts without haveing something to secure the transmission.
Can the crossmember on a 1995, 2wd be installed either way?

Thanks.

if it's close, why not use a centering punch to line up the holes just till you get the nut on the stud. then do the other side.
i've always done it this way with no problems other than a little grunting and swearing.

Yea, I have a floor jack holding up the trans, with wood between the jack and the trans.

I tried a screwdriver and I tried levering over the crossmember with a large bar and it twists the new transmission mount but not enough to align up the hole/studs on the unibody and the crossmember.

I have a feeling when I replace the motor mounts that is going to cause the everything to move back to where its supposed to be and then I will have to loosen up the trans. mount.

Thanks.

I just got.....

I loosened up the engine mounts a bit, drilled out the holes a tiny bit larger and jacked up the trans and engine just a bit higher and then pryed it over with a large screwdriver...... Theres another hole right next to the hole where the bolt goes into the frame, I used that to pry with.

Motor mounts are next.....
When I do them, should I loosen up the trans crossmember to see if it gets repositioned from changing the motor mounts?

Thanks.
