Default transmission and low water warning light

I hope this is in the right local.
I have a 96 xj 4.0l country 4x4 auto 60k miles.
on the hwy I lost 4th gear and it wouldn't come back until I exited , then returned. next day wouldn't down shift climbing hill until I put throttle to the floor. drove today no shifting issues , up down or hwy.
Was told this is the beginning of the end for this tranny , is this so ??
should I be looking into replacing ??

second , a yellow warning light lights up for 1/2 a second or so I think it says LOW WATER but im not sure . its on the warning light panel to the left of the gauges, maybe 2nd or 3rd from the bottom on right. coolant level is good.in reservoir and radiator.
A radiator flush is scheduled for Tuesday, I noticed mud inside the fill cap.

thanks in advance

Check the fluid level and condition. Use only Dex-Merc fluid.

because it's what was engineered to go into our trannys. It has special modifiers that where developed for the AW4. It's like cows milk for a calf, vs giving the calf water.

is fluid black or discolored? Probably should change it before committing to looking into the problem further. Troubleshooting= start with the simple, work your way to complicated. Follow the evidence.

That ^^^^^^^^

That "low water light" means your washer fluid is low. Problem is it lights up when it's half full.

The AW4 filter is actually more a screen. It's only meant to catch huge pieces of your tranny if it goes nuclear. Not worth changing.

Too funny!!!!

Change the fluid using what was recommended. Takes less than a gallon. Remember the photo I posted? Wally World has it.....
