I’ve got a 98 Cherokee and this transmission line started leaking today, pouring onto the exhaust and making it smoke!!! Is this a cooler line and and what would take to replace it?? Thanks in advance guys!!!

 

You can buy replacement lines. Any of the usual parts stores. They are not difficult to replace.

Or you can find the source of the leak, cut the line at that point, and slide the appropriate sized rubber tubing over each newly cut end, and secure it with cable clamps. The pressure in those lines is pretty low, and a repair like that will hold til the cows come home, or the rest of the line starts to leak in other places.

Make sure the tubing is rated for transmission fluid. Not all rubber tubing is created equal.

Where you show the line, does it leak at the connection? You can try to tighten ( don't mangle the line itself) but looks like new line needed. That connection can't be replaced by hose unfortunately.

 

It’s leaking from the fitting going into the transmission!! I saw where you can get that fitting at the parts store!!!

 

At the part where is snaps into the fitting? You can buy replacement clip and o-ring. If it's between the fitting and the case, there is an o-ring in there. Be gentle as you can break the break the aluminum of the case getting it off. Or by cross threading it when reinstalling.

The plastic clip that holds the line in may have disintegrated

If so, you can replace them with standard 3/8" fuel injection quick disconnects, and 2 new o-rings

That is what I did

You can also remove the entire Dorman fitting, but others have had trouble breaking out the female threads in the trans, so try the 1st method

check your steel line is not actually cracked

if its the clip, make sure you get any fragments of broken plastic out, as they prevent the new clip locking right in there

 

I replaced the lower tranny line in the radiator. I figured I would buy a new fitting and it comes with a new plastic clip too.
I put wrench or socket, can't remember which, to it.
All I succeeded in doing was rolling my Jeep back about an inch while in park and with the E-Brake on trying to get that off. LOL.
Gave up with the idea of replacing that real quick.
Wasn't anything wrong with the old one. It was more a "while we are here thing".
I did toy with the idea of just taking the white clip out and using it.
But said screw it and returned the part. That was almost 8 years ago.
