Default transmission light/ oil fill point?

hi, im kev, i have a 2000 cherokee sport, a while back a light appeared on the instrument panel, looks like the gearbox (transmission), so i guessed it was low on oil. today i finally got round to getting under there and actually trying to top it up / check it out. so... on the side of the casing is a bolt which says don`t remove .... so i left that 1 .. on the other side of the box ( passengerside if you are in the u.s ) theres a sensor of some discription, so i thought it might be possible to fill it from there... so i undid it... nothing came out until the last bit of thread, the bolt came off and oil went everywhere.. i got the bolt back in , but now i need to know how i fill the damn thing up! the don`t remove bolt is approximately the same height on the casing and therefore oil would also come out of that hole! where is the fill point?

many thanks in advance,
kev

Under the hood coming from near firewall. Also where you check fluid level. You'll need a funnel. Probably has a yellow cap. Don't use oil though. Trans fluid. Check your manual for specifics on which grade of trans fluid to use.

Is it manual trans or automatic? Automatic should have a dipstick. Manual I am unfamiliar with.

Sorry. Buy a Chilton or Haynes repair manual.

Alright..I checked my Grand cherokee Haynes repair manual. It doesn't say which side of trans but appears to be passenger side from illustration. It is on the side of the gear case. About @ 90 degrees. Looks like it is a nut. Be sure vehicle is level. If you have to jack it up to get under it you'll have to jack other side too to make it level. Be careful and use safety jack stands. Or just park it over a small ditch.
