Default transmission leak??

1998 jeep cherokee sport,4.0 engine,2wd,automatic.

It is leaking at the back of the tranny where the driveshaft goes into it..My guess is a rear seal...I am hoping someone here has had the same problem and know for sure what it is...I would like to have a good idea of what is causing the leak before calling the transmission shop...

Any input is appreciated.....Thanks

Yep, sounds like the rear trans seal. Nothing major at all.

Can it be fixed without taking out the transmission? How much can I expect to pay?Do I need to take it to a transmission shop or can it be done by a general mechanic? Thanks

remove the driveshaft bolts at the rear axle. 8mm i think. pull the drive shaft down and out of the rear axle ears, then out of the transmission then pop the seal out with a screwdriver. Clean inside of transmission real well with a rag and paint thinner to get it dry. I'd use a sealer all around outside of new seal so it doesnt leak fluid between the transfer case and seal. Tap seal in with a block of wood and hammer. put driveshaft back on. That should be close.

Does the slip yoke flop around on the output shaft? could need a new tailhousing.
