transmission issues *starts in 3rd* tps, tcu, tcu fuse?
hey guys,
My girls 96 XJ 4.0 AW4 is having some shifting issues.. it feels like its starting in 3rd gear... feel like it is slipping bad to get up to speed.... I can shift it manually from 1-2,3,D and it pulls hard with no slipping....
I changed the TPS and it still does the same thing... its kind of intermittent, jeep usually drives fine in the mornings then after it gets warm it does the same, But sometimes not at all or vise versa.
I searched for the tcu fuse under the passenger dash, All i found was the TCU but no fuse was located anywhere around it... I traced the wire from the TCU to the fire wall and nothing.... no fuse anywhere near the TCU could be found...
Is the fuse in the fuse block under the hood or the junction block under the driver dash? I searched those areas but didnt find anything.
Do i need to source a TCU for a 1996 xj? I know the 96's were a cross over year and are specific to parts.

I bet you'll get a kick down cable adjustment advice, and some solenoid solutions. Mine does the same thing. I changed a bunch of parts reset everything and it ran fine for a few days then back to square one. The last thing I haven't replaced is the speed sensor, or the solenoids.

was this ever resolved? Mine is doing the same thing. Not frequently enough for me to trouble shoot connections. Once in a while it will not have an automatic trans; works fine manually shifting...and I have learned if I just restart the jeep it will be ok again. At some point this will end and whatever the problem is will not be so easily reset.

Here's where the fuse is on the earlier years.
And if you refresh both the connectors in the 2nd photo, you may also fix your issue. Those plugs carry all the info between sensors, TCU, and solenoids.

Thank-you, Cruiser.

I really appreciate all your help you provide to this forum. I have cleaned the connectors, chased wires as far as I could see to look for shorts this weekend after reading your sig post regarding this.
I will just have to wait and see what happens to see if I have done enough to call it fixed.

Sounds like a solenoid issue, or corrosion in the connector near the transmission dipstick tube (see Cruiser's second pic).

Here's a pic of your connectors. The Solenoids connector could be the culprit. Uncouple it and check the pins and pin cavities for corrosion.
The wiring for these connectors sometimes gets chafed as they pass down from the connectors to the transmission - check them.

Yes, I did eventually resolve the issue. I tried everything suggested above and none of it worked. I ended up replacing the shift solenoids and now all is well. Shifts like it should.

Thank-you for all the replies. I will look at this closely as suggested.
and Mitch, thank You for your reply. That's what I will likely have to do too. Mine sounds just the same as you posted.
