is it possible that the torque converter is jammed to tight against the ring gear? also when i removed the shifter i didn't replace the linkage on the right side that runs into the steering column. I only installed the actual shift linkage..

i don't mean the bolts that hold the TQ onto the tranny, i'm talkin about the bolts that bolt it to the ring gear

yes I know what you are talking about. But when the tc is bolted to the ring gear aka flywheel it is floating on the input shaft seal and floating on the input shaft that drives the pump. If the tc was cocked or miss aligned when the bell housing was tightened it would make a lot of noise. If you loosen the 4 bolts the tc should move back and forth with ease and you should hear the "clunk" of it doing so. If you loosen the bolts and it doesn't move(tc) then the pump drive gear is miss aligned with the drive notches on the tc.

even with sugar on top , the only way would be to pull back the trans and realign the tc, but you would more than likely have to change the input seal as well.

Yes, if not low on oil the only thing left is a pump that is not being turned

you just have to rotate the tc back and forth and gentle push in at the same time until the tc drops into the trans bell housing all the way. believe me you will be able to notice when it does. It will end up like at least and 1 1/4 behind the edge of the bell housing flange
