Default Transmission Front Main Seal

Planning on taking the 2001 Cherokee in to have the Front Main Seal on the auto trans. replaced. Anything else that anyone recommends having done or replaced while its being done. They are going to replace the seal where the driveshaft meets the Trans. and they said more likely then not the Torque Converter has gone bad so they are going to check that(is that common for the Torque converter?). I would love to do this myself but I do not have the proper tools and equipment. They said it would be about a 4 hour job (does that sounds about right to anyone else?).

Thanks for any help and input.

I bet the leak is not the front seal but the TC it's self.

On a high mileage vehicle and you have to pull the tranny I always recommend changing the TC.

can the rear main seal be replaced easily once the transmission is out for the TC?

It won'e be that much easier to replace the rear main seal with the trans out. The rear main is a 2 piece seal that's part of the rear main bearing cap. The oil pan must be pulled to get to the rear main cap.

You might have to get a bit creative to figure out how to support the engine with the trans out and the oil pan off.

ok great, I do not have a rear main leak at the moment but just thought it may be worth swapping if it was easier at that point.

So to replace the TC and check the front seal does 4hrs labor sound about right?

Is it these newer jeeps that seem to have issues with the flex plate?

Well, usually a front main seal will go bad because A; the bushing the TC rides in is worn, B; The trans has overheated. I would suggest replacing the bushing in the pump.

i would clarify for the guy becasue he may just go in there and drop an extra 600ish
and yes 4 is not to far off. they normally include dio time and expect lil things to go wronge. (bolt break, if its been worked on befor and somone cross screwed junk, connector or soemthing cracked, you know the good ol monday stuff.)

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted, but a update..

The leak ended up being the rear main or Valve Cover Gasket. The oil is just leaking all the way down real slow and dropping off the front part of the trans. The mechanic said the amount of oil leaking is not worth getting the rear main replaced for. It really isnt bad but just annoying. After doing some further digging I really think it may be the back of the Valve cover gasket.
