I'll be checking the fluid, but figured this might be some good preventive maintenance. Right now there seems to be a touch of hesitation switching to the next gear while under a slight load.

Might not be a definite fix, but is definitely worth doing.

Adjust Throttle valve cable. I had this same issue, and it went away as soon as i did this. Under the hood, to the right of the valve cover, there is a button that looks like a "D". Press it and hold it in. There is the cable with a small plastic piece on it under the D button. Slide it in all the way, then release the button. Get in the car, press the gas pedall ALL the way down, and you will hear it ratchet, or click in to place. You will notice an amazing difference in shifting and power. (Sorry i had to describe this in lay mans terms) There are more detailed write ups, but it really is that simple.

I literally just read through a build thread with these instructions! Thanks for the reply - I'll be doing this over the weekend when I switch out my cracked 0331. Trying to knock out a bunch of stuff all at once.

You need to go to a transmission shop (ONLY) and have them check things out while doing a fluid and filter change. They can tell you if there are any other problems "Before" you start throwing parts and adjustments at it. Plus they usually have a good code reader to check the trans with for problems, I think ones this old will give info on trans if not can check line pressure for you and shift points.
I bet you will find it's a lot cheaper in the long run, just find an honest shop who has been in business a long time.

Watch out for rust on the release button. I just did mine, and it woiuld not budge. Had to work on it a while with some penetrating oil to get it working freely, and it MUST be working freely for the adjustment to work.
It took way longer to get the button working than it did to do the adjustment!
Parts, yes. The adjustment we're discussing is FREE, EASY, and solves a lot of problems. No shop advice needed.

couple years ago I had an ingenious idea to replace all the tranny fluid in my dmax, iirc it holds 3 gallons.. 1 week later I had a front seal go out, had to take tranny out to replace !!!! fluke?? dunno, but I've read to many times about new fluids detergents destroying old seals, so in my cherokee I only drain half at a time, drive and repeat as needed until desired results are fulfilled....

Any auto parts store. It's as common as dirt.

Oh, my bad. I didn't realize that.
In that case, you need to use the 4.5. And it's best if you run it through your nose, first.
Best way is to get a friend to help you. Stand on your head, and have him (or her) pour it into one nostril, and catch it in a BLUE pan when it comes out the other side. It has to be a BLUE pan, of course.
You had to start with me, didn't you?
