Not true, standard power steering fluid.

I flushed mine and use Dexron III like the trans, one less fluid to carry around.

Default Power steering fluid for Cherokee... ?

Living far away from a Jeep dealer (in Denmark a Jeep is concidered as something quite exotic ) I have quite few posibilities of buying the right Mopar MS-5931.
What would be a proper fluid, I can get from a local gas station (in mind that I am living in Europe).

Thanks ! John

Consider your recommedation source, "the assistant at o'riley's". Did you want fries with that?
Use power stearing fluid for best results.
As an example of misapplication, just did a full double flush on brake system as the customer put trans fluid in the brake reservoir. The master cap gasket swelled to twice normal size. Customer admits to being a complete johnson (since that's his name) and can offer no other logical explanation as to why he did it. Just a stroke of good luck the piston rings in the master were viton material and resisted the effects of the fluid, else a very problematic application of the brakes would have resulted.
Apply the proper fluids for your applications and consider alternative advice thoroughly.

Anytime you need fluids refer to the owners manual not the guy behind the counter (sounds funny since I'm usually that guy) its the safest thing to do, the computer system isn't 100% accurate.

Not sure if there is difference between the WJ and the XJ, but this is what i read here.

Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)
MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.
This is the only one i found that says is compatible with MS5931.

I'm in the process of flushing my steering fluid as well....
Btw, my stealership wants $15 for a quart of Mopar brand.

I would think any standard power steering fluid would work just fine. That's what I put in my 2001 XJ with 187,000 miles...zero problems. I'm sure DexIII compatible transmission fluid would work fine. My old Volvo 940 takes it fine for the trans and power steering.

i hate when parts guys make recommendations from their *******s.. and I am a parts guy myself!

stick with standard labeled power steering fluid and you will be just fine.

The Valvoline max life is a good choice IMO

Does it really matter if you use regular old power steering fluid vs. Dex/merc in either III or IV form?? Isn't IV just a newer and enhanced formulation that's mostly backwards compatible?

Dex IV is synthetic, it can be used in place of III if your system calls for III but if it calls for IV you can't use III, same goes for merc V to dex/merc.

There is no Dex IV or V. It went from Dex III to VI. The VI is at least partially synthetic. It starts out thinner than Dex III, but holds its viscosity better. In the XJ (whether PS, TC, or AT), I'd use a name-brand Dex III, and it will be just fine.
