Default Transmission fluid leak at 4wd adapter to tranny

Hello all,

I've got a 2000 XJ with the 4.0l and AW4 trans. I've had a leak that I assumed was either the output of the trans or the input of the X-case. I replaced both last weekend and cleaned it up. There was definitely a leak there (when I separated the two a lot of fluid came out), but I am still leaking fluid. The space above the trans mount where the weep hole is is dry so I believe the fluid is not coming from there anymore, but from where the 4wd adapter housing is mounted to the trans.

My question is this, to replace the gasket (with gasket maker) do I simply unbolt the adapter, clean up the mating surfaces and reassemble or is there more to it (does the adapter hold things in that have been shimmed to attain a certain spec or is it simply a spacer between the trans and X-case.)

There is a slight possibility it may simply be the pan gasket, but I replaced that several months ago. I will likely do that prior to attempting the 4wd adapter housing surface just to rule it out.

Thanks!

There is no gasket between the adaptor and the transmission. It was originally assembled using a gasket maker type material.

The adaptor is basically a spacer, but has provision for mounting the transmission output speed sensor. The OSS rotor is inside the adaptor, mounted on the transmission output shaft.

Thanks CCKen. In saying that there is no gasket are you meaning the leak wouldn't be between the trans and 4wd adapter, or that it if it is leaking just remove the adapter clean surfaces and use gasket maker?

Tighten adaptor housing bolts to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
