Default Differences in axle shafts

I pulled the axle shaft on the bottom out of my 93 XJ, and the top one (fresh coat of black paint) out of an earlier model. I think it might have been an 89.

The newer shaft is a larger diameter at 1.34" vs 1.21". I think the shafts are manufactured differently also, the larger shaft yoke is pressed onto a spline on the shaft and the smaller shaft appears to have the yoke welded onto the shaft.

Anyone familiar with strength differences between the two, or what years they switched?
