Transmission Fluid to Change or Not
You can do it any time. My preference is to do it all in one go..why wait?...pan & tools are out.
I personally like to do it the 4 times which is 8-12 litres, so that is 2 x 5 litre containers on special, 70-80$A
thats 95% pure fluid.
I know it cost $300+ to have your ATF flushed at the auto trans specialist, so I save well over $250 for maybe 2hrs work
imo, and auto trans service should include check transfer case ATF (they only take 1,2litres, so they can run very dry with any sort of leak
also wd40 on the auto trans adjustment button in the engine bay, and follow the procedure to check that
examine and clean for leaks.
The cooler hose clips will be very brittle after 28yrs. Dont fiddle with them. My whole original AT cooler system needed replacing
I did a write up (as have other) on replacing the clips with screw in brass barbs
ATF should not be brown or black. You should sniff it for signs of burnt smell, and examine the bottom of the drain tray for particulate matter.
In future, if you follow FSM recommendations, and do not overheat the trans, its life will be substantially extended.
Not changing fluid is nutz, as it leads to a build up of sludge and debris, certain vital chemicals are depleted, and it becomes contaminated with water and other chemical by products

and just suck it out from the top now.The new fluid gets circulated pretty quickly so you don't need to wait that long between drain/fill. I also wouldn't worry about changing the filter. It's more of a screen than a filter. Im my opinion jsut not worth th effort to pull the pan to change it.

that's a really cool tool - i got car ramps so it wasn't too bad.... but this is much simpler
I run into this problem all the time. I'm currently sitting on 10+ gallons of ATF and coolant waiting for our local hazardous waste pick up. I wish local places accepted ATF and coolant like they do oil.
Yes, go to the magnifying glass in top RH where it says "search threads"
click "advanced" type in the subject matter, and select Title or text, selct a specific user name sometimes (mine is "awg"), usually select forum as this one
* edit..here is the link I was referring to, not exactly a writep, but has needed info
Transmission return line female threads broke in half - Jeep Cherokee Forum
See that T55 Torx in my pic?...that port is where one should mount a trans temp gauge, although I do believe it is deleted on post '98
This is one of the best mods I have done ~$30, and it has saved my trans on multiple occasions ( I burnt up my previous one)
A pan mounted one is not as accurate, mine shows max temp at pump, my redline is 220F
If it is warm to hot where you live, and you do slow off-road or tow, it is 100% essential
To get rid of coolant, let it evaporate (dont let your dog drink any)
In Australia, most auto parts places that sell oil are required by law to take it back. I take it back in original style containers and they usually have a bin or something
They dont actually like it much, and one dude denied me. I informed him of the law. He told me to F off
I left the 5 litre container just inside the front door on my way out
