Default Transmission Drain or Flush?

I honestly plan on draining and refilling my 97 Jeep XJ. I just hit 212k miles and I think its in time for a change. I have done the oil/transfer case and both differentials a month ago.

Would you guys recommend what I said to drain and refill like 3 times over a week? Or do a flush? I have heard of issues with high mileage transmissions getting flushed causing big problems.

Is it very easy to drain and refill a few times? Would love opinions. There's a drain plug right?

Thanks,

Jay

Don't flush it. I get people at work asking me all the time to do a flush and if it's over ~140k I refuse to do it. Too many lpotential problems. I would only flush a transmission if it had been kept up per manufacturers spec from day one. 99% of the time it hasn't.

Yes. And yes there's a drain plug.

When I first got my '00, with 147K, I was able to determine that the PO had the system done at 105K. He had the work done at my Jeep Dealership that is a customer of the auto parts store I work at. They were more then happy to tell me what had been done to her. I just gave them the VIN. I have heard the same thing that DeltaOP4 said. It is sometimes all the gunk in there that is holding the tranny together. Sounds like way back when you used to put saw dust in a tranny to get it too work a little longer. LOL. So I didn't flush but dropped the fluid through the drain plug, tapped the ignition to bet a little more out, dropped the pan (Might need to hit the O ring that is holding the filler tube in the elbow that is attached to the pan with a little heat to separate. They get all hard and crusty in there) , replaced the filter, if you could call it that, the gasket, reassembled, and refilled. Now every two years I drop whatever fluid will come out of the drain plug, don't even tap the ignition, and refill. Do the transfer case too.

Agree. Just add #6: If you own a Renix, refer to Cruiser 54's Tips

Off topic: Cruiser, I noticed you added a couple tips since I checked in last . I'll have to add the fuel pump ground!

My dang drain plug is stripped from top to bottom, it just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning. No power tools either, it's gonna be a bear to get off.
