Hey everyone, first post here but have been lurking for a while.

I have a 94 XJ 230k miles auto

i was on a long 5 hour driving trip through hilly/mountainous roads and out of nowhere its like i shifted my XJ into neutral while driving

Pulled over, would not go in drive, 3, 1/2, or reverse. i have a aftermarket tranny cooler, she was not running hot, not loaded down, and it wasnt shifting hard. This is whats going on

While shifting from park to drive the RPMs briefly fluctuate like it wants to go in gear but nothing happens

Pulled the TCM fuse ran it through the gears and still no movement
Tried adjusting the throttle cable
Made sure the gear shift linkage is still connected
Plenty of transmission fluid
Fluid is still bright red, changed it about 3 months ago

Heres what i did notice, i pulled the transmission lines on both sides of the cooler and there is no line pressure at all, no fluid flowing.

so doing some research it could be 2 things, ive seen some posts about the front pump dying, but it usually gives some type of warning, or the torque converter.

Any suggestions where to start or what to look at?

Do this cold fluid level check. If the trans fluid level does not drop to somewhere near the tip of the dipstick the torque converter has malfunctioned or the trans oil pump has malfunctioned.


Make sure the trans fluid level is at or above the full/max mark before starting the test. If it isn't add a bit of trans fluid to bring it up.

 

Thanks for the reply, i just tried it and no fluid movement at all, is there a way to tell if its the TC or pump without taking it out first?

 

Not that I know of, but if you are going to pull the transmission to replace the pump you should replace the torque converter as well.
