My 1996 jeep cherokee sport 4WD with 214k has the original transmission. When i put it into reverse it almost sounds like its reving up before literally poping into gear. drive pops in loud and makes the whole jeep move. same with shifting gears. my friend said mounts, but theyre fine. my dad says a new one. what about rebuilding it? i need help.

 

I'm not expert, but possibly your clutch is going bad? It shouldn't rev before it pops into gear.

 

its an automatic ...no clutch

 

How's the fluid look? Burnt at all? At the proper level?

Test your throttle position sensor. Replace if necessary. Also clean your idle air control valve with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. If you don't know what those are, they're both sensors located on the throttle body
