Default which transfercase

I have located an 88 Cherokee with a busted transfer case. I want to in what are my options with replace it. I am new to the jeep family and not real sure what will fit my needs. I am going to hunt and fish with the xj. More mud and dirt trails than rocks here. I am looking to use this as a mostly daily driver so I don't want to modify heavily just yet. No major lifting or suspension upgrades until I get an extra vehicle. I have been told by the current owner that the he has a np242 in it now. Would like a direct replacement or little modification. Thanks and I will be trolling around using all the great ideas on this forum. Pictures to come

NP231J or NP242 from another XJ will be a straight drop-in. If you change between NP242 and NP231 you'll need the linkage, bezel, an shiftgate too. If it's from a new model you may have to make a few tweaks to get the vacuum disco to work, or just eliminate the stupid thing and drive more reliably. Something in my head say that NP242 doesn't have the dumb CAD though, so that would make things easy.

As an older XJ you may need to swap input gears into your new transfer case. Here's why: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm
