hello, i just picked up a 98 cherokee 4.0 auto, its in really good shape but has two major issues that i am concerned with.
the first one is that the transfer case is stuck in 4x4. if i move the lever from 2wd to 4h i do not feel anything. i have not tried to put it in 4L because i do not want to have it stuck in low. I'm thinking that maybe the shifter fork is broken or has fallen off? any suggestions would be awesome.
the second one is the worst and i don't even know where to begin with this one. i will try to describe it as best as i can. when it is very wet outside or i wash the jeep the "check engine" light comes on and the jeep will take longer to shift. mostly from 2nd to 3rd. i let the jeep sit over night, get in it and the "check engine" light turns off and the trans shifts perfect. i washed it the other day and it happened and i took it to the local parts store and had them scan it. "o2 sensor" "low engine temp" (any advice on this issue work help out also) "shift solenoid A" came up. i was going to replace the shift solenoids but they are somewhat costly and may not even be the problem. so i figured i would reach out for some advice before i moved any further on these small buy annoying issues. thanks a lot. -Studie.

not sure if this is gonna help, but i would check underneath for any damaged or exposed wiring. im not very electrically savvy, but i do know that water and wires dont mix. it seems to me that your problem happens when water is involved, so something may be getting wet that's not supposed to. if you find any exposed wiring, cover it with electrical tape. hope it helps, or at least puts you on the right track. good luck

For your problem being stuck in 4 wheel, check the linkage between the transfer case lever and the transfer case. Its underneath the jeep, directly below the tcase lever. Theres a screw that tightens down on the linkage and if it comes loose the lever will move wothout actually shifting the tcase. If its stuck in 4 wheel make sure the lever is postioned in 4 wheel and then get underneath it and tighten the linkage up. I had a very similar problem with mine.
As for the transmission problems with water, I dont know much about the wiring but i do know there are sensors along the transmission that may be getting wet and causing the problem. I get under there and put dielectric grease on all of those connections before getting into the expensive parts.
i hope this helps some!
