From what I understand, the transfer case is held on by 6 bolts (so it should be really easy to drop). Really all depends on your mechanical ability (for example, I wouldn't trust myself to do that unless I had an entire day to myself haha). But I wouldn't think you should have a problem

well i just got surprised, mine has a 242 in it, the transfer case i THOUGHT that i was installing today is a 231w/sye, i also got the drive shaft from the same jeep the transfer was connected to. Am i going to run into any problems trying to install the 231 ????? Its my dd, i need it, my orig transfer has a growling chain while i drive. If these are compatible as far as bolting up, id like a heads up, im hesitant about tearing one apart and not getting it back together!!! Thanks guys!!!

Check the spline counts on the input shafts and make sure they match. Were both TC behind the same type of trans (auto or manual)? I think some inputs were different lengths?? I have swapped in a 242 for a 231 with no issues, but both units came from behind an AW4. I did have to swap input shafts to match up spline count first on my newer 242 (I had a spare input from another 242). Just make sure the linkage is set up and you can get to all the positions on the TC after install.
