Default Transfer case question, easy fix?

Hello, I am new to the forum but not to cherokees. I am in the process of looking for another xj and came across one in the area. A little background on it: 1998 4.0 5 speed with 200,000 miles on it. Lifted 4.5 inches, all work done by a mechanic. I went to see it, runs and drives great, a little bit of cosmetic work that I will need to do but there is no oil in the coolant and vise versa. The only problem that I found was that when in 4 high, I shifted from 1st to 2nd and when I let the clutch out, everything just spun. i.e. the entire drive train went straight into neutral.

Is there a problem with the transfer case all together or would this be a relatively easy fix?

might just be a linkage adjustment. if not the t-case is a easy rebuild. not alot of moving parts in them.

linkage could be out of adjustment, which T-case? 231? 242? try 4lo. maybe a broken motor mount or trans mount is letting the T-case move pulling the linkage knocking it into neutral

which T-case? 231? 242?
not sure which one, is there a big difference when it comes to which is which? and for that matter, how can you tell?

might just be a linkage adjustment.
I would have to take a look, is that something that gradually starts happening, or would it just all of a sudden pop?

Thanks for the responses guys, I really want the jeep but I need to know what I am getting myself into

without climbing under and reading the tag, the shift pattern on a 231 is 2hi 4hi N 4 lo; on a 242 it's 2hi- 4hi part time-4 hi full time- N- 4lo
