Default Transfer Case Production date??

Howdy all. I have an 89 Laredo w/242 t-case. It broke and now I need to replace it. I have called around to the yards in my area and they told me that XJ's with a production date prior to November 1988 have a different input shaft than ones made after Nov. 88'. I called the dealership and they didn't know what the difference was. I called Advance Adapters and they said it might be the spline count. 21-23 nobody knows though. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks

I can tell you that when chrysler took over they upgraded the aw4 tranys to 23 spline when they up graded the motors to h.o,they were 21 prior to that, going by that I would say 90 to 87 either 231 or 242 would be fine.

Frank, man you beat me to the punch. as to the OP, idk if you want to retain the option for full-time 4wd. but I happen to have an NP231 out of an 89 XJ that had a 4.0 and auto trans sitting outback in the shed. It has like 65k miles on it and i've been trying to get rid of it for a while now.

just listen to frankz....he knows his stuff!!

your 242 has 21 spline count and the short inputshaft. the junk yard is wrong......any tcase from an auto 4.0L xj years 87-90 will work for you.

231 or 242.........
