Default Transfer Case linkage Snafu

I was.attempting to remove the factory transfer case linkage and it would seem in the process of removing the tab from the Transfer Case tab I got it partially engaged. XJ was parked when I did this, while attempting to turn it around heard a pop and now the transmission will not engage. I am thinking about placing the XJ in neutral, wheels chocked then put the tab back on and tap/hit with hammer to disengage the TC. Advice or suggestions appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I reattached the factory tab to the TC and got it to fully engage 4H and the car will move forward and reverse. It seems like the Transfer Case will move.towards 2WD but not "lock in" and this is when the transmission won't engage. I can see what I think is the issue now just need to get the Transfer Case to grab the tab in 2WD.

Sorry to see that you are having a problem. The Jeep transfer case (TC) is hearty. When you say "turned it around" are you talking about moving the Jeep around or the TS shift tab? If you place the TC shift tab back on the TC shift selector you should be able to move move the shift selector with a little hand force. Try to place the TC to neutral and go from there. Sometimes when you use a hammer you get hammers results. Use your parking brake and start the Jeep, shift to drive. If you hear a TC noise the shifter is not in neutral and in between gears.

Check this out, it works great. http://www.boostwerksengineering.com...ans-_p_25.html

I was attempting to turn the XJ around to get the front end in and possibly on ramps. I was able to hook a chain to it and pull it in then chock the wheels. Then with the tab I got it back to 4H and pulled up and in. It is parked in 4H right now. So when you say neutral on the TC, on the 231 if I am following what you are saying my idea of 2WD is actually Neutral. With the 231 the tab should be all the way down and I can move it by hand it just doesn't seem.to grab and stay in neutral.

If you are using the Boostwerks linkage the new shift lever from the kit needs to placed in the up position with the curve of the lever pointing AFT. Grab the shift lever and rotate the lever clockwise as far is it will go, you should be in 2 High at that point. On my XJ I placed the Boostwerks linkage in the center mount hole and made my adjustments from there.

Hope this helps and Merry Christmas.

I appreciate the advice, thanks. I am waiting for a dryer driveway to tackle it. I can see what you are saying about the furthest point clockwise with the old tab reinstalled I turn it that way but it won't grab and stay locked in 2WD and the old linkage has been removed. The hammer won't work because of the cross member, I need to get something like a cheater pipe over the tab on the TC and hopefully that will give me enough leverage for that last little pull. I still have the top pieces of the old one to remove otherwise I would have tried using the boostwerks and lever in the console to push it in. Thanks again, enjoy your holiday.

Thanks Viper, I went back at it with a clear head and knocked it out today. I got the TC back to 2WD, demo'd the rest of the linkage and installed the boostwerks kit. I probably need to adjust it a little but can go to 4H and 2WD no problem at all.
